'Up' Leads List of 20 Potential Animated Nominees
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 12:56PM
Here's the list of the 20 films that have already been submitted for the Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards. Now, with Up a very likely Best Picture nominee, that kind of undercuts this category. We've mentioned this before: If Up is in the running for Best Picture and, say, Ponyo wins Best Animated, then why isn't Ponyo in the Best Picture race?

That's not to demean the other movies but if you're looking at it logically, if Up isn't inherently better than everything else in the animated division, then those movies should be up for Best Picture instead, and I think it's safe to say that won't happen.
Not everything that might wind up in the field of nominees has had its qualifying Academy run, according to Variety, films like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Princess and the Frog. But it does clear the way for five nominees, which we've missed in years past. New rules specify that if 16 movies are eligible, then the category will be opened up to five flicks.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
Astro Boy
Battle for Terra
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Coraline
Disney’s A Christmas Carol
The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Mary and Max
The Missing Lynx
Monsters vs. Aliens
9
Planet 51
Ponyo
The Princess and the Frog
The Secret of Kells

I would think that just because a movie won Best Animated...doesn't mean that it's the best movie of the year....just the best animated movie. I mean...what is the criteria for Best Animated? Are they looking strictly at the technical animation itself, or are they also looking at story/plot, voice acting? To mean...a movie could easily an animated movie, and win Best Picture, but not win Best Animated...and vise versa...IF the criteria for Best Animated is strictly for the technical merits of the animation and not for "how good" of a movie it is.
I respectfully disagree... I don't think the category is about the quality of the animation (that should do in the SFX categories if it was the case) but the quality of the overall product. Not to say that the quality of the animation isn't taken into account but logically if only one of them is nominated for best film of the year it clearly is the best animated film as well.
Well...if you'll read what I actually typed:
To me...a movie could easily an animated movie, and win Best Picture, but not win Best Animated...and vise versa...IF the criteria for Best Animated is strictly for the technical merits of the animation and not for "how good" of a movie it is.
That's why I threw in the IF. I don't actually know what the criteria is. But, if it is stricly on the technical merits of the animation...then I stand behind my statement.
Are is "Best Animation" also judged on "how good the movie is"? Does anyone know? Colin? It would certainly help make or break any arguments.
I don't believe it's just technical merits, no. At least, you couldn't argue that the year Shrek won the award.
Easy emo... don't slit your wrists. I did read your account, that's why I said 'in my opinion' and then commented on the IF of yours. As Frankie says, relax.
Amazing as always :)
