Matt Damon Backs Up Start Date for 'Bourne 4'

Paul Greengrass will direct Matt Damon again in Green Zone, which was originally set for a fall release but is now scheduled for March 12th. It's their third film together, following the second and third Bourne movies. But Damon is among those who has openly discussed returning to the world of Jason Bourne, with some caveats.

He's at it again, telling Total Film that the primary reason to even think about a fourth film is because so many people want it. So much for leaving them wanting more, I guess. But that alone won't get the movie made.

"We love the character and we would love to do another one. For us, that means reuniting with all of our friends who made the other movies and going on another round-the-world adventure again. So, personally, selfishly, we’d all really like to do it, but we are really serious about trying to get the story and the script right because the only thing more disappointing than not having another one of these movies is – for us or for movie fans – to make one that isn’t good."

Damon goes on to say that a script is far, far away, but that the working plan is to begin shooting in a year-and-a-half, if all goes well in this stage. That's about a year away from the previous update that had this movie opening in 2011. You rarely see an action movie as good as The Bourne Ultimatum, and it's probably the best part three ever made. So as much as people want to see it keep going because they love that film, it's also such a perfect ending that you'd hate to tarnish it by delivering a weak product the next time around. There's still room for the character to grow, but I suspect it might have to take on a relatively new form in order to do it. The only reason running around the world for three movies was permissible before was because they were all advancing to one point. But that point has been reached, so the challenge is finding a place to take Bourne now, and possibly for another movie or two.
