Scorsese to Receive DeMille Award at Golden Globes

You could give Martin Scorsese just about any award you want and I don't think anyone would protest. Though he emerged at a time when American film was really blossoming, you could really only argue that among his contemporaries, Steven Spielberg is on the same level. Even then, I'm not certain Spielberg has been as consistent or as daring as Scorsese has in his career. They're also shooting for different goals most of the time.

A couple years ago, Scorsese finally got his Oscar, even if it's not the best example of his work and certainly not the first time he earned the award. At the Golden Globes in January, Scorsese will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." Spielberg, incidentally, won this past year.

We know the movies by heart - Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Last Waltz, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, GoodFellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed - and on that basis alone, Scorsese is long overdue for the highest such award handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But he is also one of the leading forces in preservation of classic film. In fact, he formed The Film Foundation in 1990 for that exact purpose.

His work on that front goes back to the early 1980s, and he's been instrumental in not only raising awareness about the probably of the need to save and repair older films, but also in the restoration efforts themselves.

So, kudos to Scorsese, a real guiding light in the history of cinema.

Great posting thanks for writing it...

Scorsese is a remarkable filmmaker and director, he contributions to film and not only entertainment which I could care less about, but his contributions for raising awareness of the human condition, life, emotions, and stories are what he has done so effectively..

Not only that, one can argue strongly he MADE the careers and lives of several actors for which the world would not know hadnt it been for him...can anyone say Robert de Niro, one of the greatest actors in history

I consider him far greater than Spielberg even while they both have different goals and directions...

So salute to Scorsese and jeez what a career of films, in that one sentence you wrote regarding his films summed up over 25+ years of hard work ...I mean WOW!
