'Thor' To Go Into Production in January

According to a Tweet from Production Weekly, the Marvel Comics adaptation Thor will begin filming in January, about seven months after principal casting began but in plenty of time (we hope) to prepare the film for a summer 2011 release.

The 140-characters-or-less announcement actually goes like this: "Filming on Marvel's Thor is scheduled to begin in LA mid- January, then move to Santa Fe, New Mexico from March till late-April." That timeline sets up perfectly for a trailer premiere at Comic Con, the audience that could make or break this film. Not the thousands in attendance that weekend specifically, but the millions how keep their ears to the ground that weekend waiting to hear the unstoppable rumbling of surefire genre hits.

Marvel has big plans for Thor, although maybe not as big as Iron Man. I doubt we'll get a trilogy out of the Norse God, but Marvel needs this movie to help segue into The Avengers in summer 2012. There's Captain America, too, and I'm more excited for the prospects of that film than Thor, just because there's a lot more unknown to what Kenneth Branagh can/could bring to this project and two untested leads in a movie this size has really never been done before. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston? Not exactly Bale, Downey, or even Maguire.

But this could be a real test for Marvel as it begins to explore more of the less popular characters in its universe. If Thor works, that could really open the door for movies Marvel hadn't even been considering before.

The supporting cast here is really good - Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colm Feore - and that could inform future decisions, too. But it's still a delicate balance with this Avengers tale more than any other.
