Video - 'Hurt Locker' Q & A with Kathryn Bigelow

With the Oscar deadline about six weeks away, there still doesn't seem to be enough films to completely quiet the mid-year run of The Hurt Locker. Though I don't expect it to win a lot, I still feel it's the year's best movie and should and will be nominated for the biggest awards - Best Picture, probably Best Actor, Best Director, probably Best Original Screenplay, and very likely Best Cinematography, as well as a few other tech awards (editing, sound editing).

Recently, writer-director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) led a DGA discussion about the film with director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal, on whose own experiences as a journalist in Iraq The Hurt Locker is based. We also see co-star Anthony Mackie and hear from producer Greg Shapiro (I believe).

I wish this were longer, because we never actually hear from Boal. But we do get a lot about exactly how you make a movie like this on an extremely limited budget in the Middle East, as well as some great insight from Bigelow on the decision making process of directing in general.

Incidentally, I'm not saying it shouldn't win all those Oscars. If I had to vote today, it would take three of those major categories, in my estimation. I just think it might be overpowered by some of the films yet to be released, at least in the minds, eyes, and ears of Oscar voters. If it still pulls a few victories, then it's an even greater testament to how good the film really is.

And if Bigelow wins Best Director, there's another glass ceiling shattered: No woman has ever won the award, and she'd only be the fourth woman even nominated (Lina Wurtmuller, Jane Campion, Sophia Coppolla).

And if you want another Hurt Locker interview, check out our extended chat with star Jeremy Renner from earlier this year.

Aww, the interview was just getting interesting as it ended.

I'm rooting for Kathryn Bigelow, Jeremy Renner and the rest of the cast and crew for multiply Oscar nominations.
