Great Cast Assembled for 'The King's Speech'

The Weinstein Company may be able to pull itself out of the fire if Nine is as good as it looks. Money, probably, Oscar stuff, almost certainly, and then we might have to reevaluate what Harvey and Bob are doing again. The Weinsteins have already gobbled up the North American distribution rights (as well as some other countries) for the film The King's Speech.

It's a period drama about King George VI, the royal who assumed the crown after his brother Edward abdicated to marry an American. Great story, should be a quality film. Tom Hooper (John Adams, The Damned United) will direct, and Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush had already been linked to the project, which is a good start.
But get a load of the actors filling out the cast: Variety reports Helena Bonham Carter, Jennifer Ehle, Guy Pearce, Derek Jacobi, Timothy Spall, and Michael Gambon have all signed on, and that's about as good as it gets.
After the death of their father, King George V, Edward VIII became King of England, but after about a year, he decided he wanted to marry a twice-divorced socialite, but was advised against it for political and religious reasons. If he had gone through with it, the marriage might have caused a complete shake-up of British government. So instead, he chose to abdicate, became the Duke of Windsor (he of the Windsor knot, by the way), and the throne was left to his reluctant brother.
My assumption would be that this will be rolled out in time for next Oscar season. It has that look about it already, and with Firth a possible Best Actor nominee, that gives this film even more oomph the next time the awards come up.
