Rachel McAdams Not Playing Black Cat in 'Spidey 4'

Well, damn the luck. Rachel McAdams is refuting claims made last week that she was all but cast in Spider-Man 4 as Black Cat. Oh well...at least it's picture time again.

The story later included British actress Romola Garai, who went so far as to admit she had auditioned for a part in the film without knowing exactly what the role would be. However, because of the McAdams angle, it was assumed to also be Black Cat. It could still be, I suppose, and you'd probably work it out on your own that Garai and McAdams would be vying for the same part, whatever it turns out to be.

But while Garai has had contact with the producers about something or other, McAdams denies it altogether, telling Entertainment Weekly, "“That’s a total rumor, I have to say.” She adds, “I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.”

Sony also confirmed it's just grist for the rumor mill, and boy, would a Rachel McAdams sure take all the attention away from Kirsten Dunst. I'm not sure the studio would want that, and frankly, Bryce Dallas Howard did the same thing simply by showing up for Spidey 3. Imagine if they'd done more with Gwen Stacy or if, in fact, Sam Raimi does go the villainess route in part four.

Because there's so much secrecy about this project mixed with a heavy dose of bad or unconfirmed information, it's hard to know what to take at face value. I sure hope Raimi sticks to his guns and gives us one bad guy, though, just to correct course from where we left off in 2007.
