Trailer - Oscar Hopeful Jeff Bridges in 'Crazy Heart'

Before a couple of weeks ago, we had this much figured for the Best Actor race: Possibly Jeremy Renner from Hurt Locker, Morgan Freeman from Invictus, maybe Daniel Day-Lewis in Nine, George Clooney for Up in the Air, and a player to be named later. Colin Firth emerged, gaining steam for his work in A Single Man, and now there's Jeff Bridges, whose new film, Crazy Heart was added to the Fox Searchlight fall release schedule after nothing else distinguished itself.

We made the case for Bridges over the weekend, when he featured the poster for this film, but it bears repeating: Four nominations, zero wins, at least two Oscar-caliber peformances that were snubbed. A fifth nomination would tie him with Hanks, Hackman, Penn, Washington, Gary Cooper, Frederic March, Gregory Peck, James Stewart, and several others. It's not quite Nicholsonian, but it's a different stratum to be sure.

Can he win? Unless Oscar voters pick a repeat winner or a first-timer like Renner or Firth, then yes, he certainly can. And I would say that in the environment of make-good Oscars, Bridges could win even without his finest (or the year's finest) performance. Here's the first trailer for Crazy Heart, which opens December 16th.

The one curiosity in this trailer is why there's no mention of Colin Farrell. You see his head, briefly, but he's not even listed in the credits. I wonder if, in the spirit of the season (not that spirit or that season), Searchlight wants to avoid any potential baggage the bad boy can bring.

It's like he's giving us his best Kris Kristofferson impersonation. Not that it's a bad thing I guess but it's all I could think of while watching and listening to him.

Wow Colin Farrell is in this, thats kinda surprising... maybe they want all the attention on Jeff Bridges...

You know Im not exactly sold, I have been hearing Colin Firth is getting amazing BUZZ for his performance, much more than your mentioning Colin...

I think it really is up to Colin Firth & Morgan Freeman.... possibly just possibly DDLewis...but honestly I think it's up to those two , from where we stand now....

A case for Jeff Bridges...the dude up for an Oscar? I like Jeff Bridges, but no...

I think Colin Firth is more deserving. He's at the top of his game with his turn in "A Single Man' and ...look at his films: The English Patient, A Month in the Country, Another Country, Shakespeare in Love, Girl With A Pearl Earring, Where The Truth Lies, Valmont...to only name a few.

Jeff Bridges is a fine actor, but he's already won an Oscar and his performance is not the best in his career. I say, let the first timers have a go at it - For example, Colin Firth would most definitely win if the Oscars were only based on the acting versus the politics and campaigning it has devolved into. He definitely delivered the finest performance of his career. That's saying something with his amazing track record of delivering eerily good acting even in movies which are considered "throwaway" flicks (such as rom coms, etc.). He's an extremely dedicated actor that needs recognition at least once in his life.
I just hope that we don't get a repeat winner this year - at least make it interesting and give the Oscar to a new nominee such as Firth or Renner.
