More 'Thor': Marvel Adds the Warriors Three

Thor is speeding into production pretty soon - January, as of the latest report - and the cast keeps filling out, much to our satisfaction, I have to admit. In fact, the oil questions have to be Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), just because they're relative unknowns by comparison.

Director Kenneth Branagh has thrown Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tabadnobu Asano (all kinds of magnificent in the foreign language nominee Mongol) into the mix to play the Warriors Three. Stevenson, you'll recall, was the second third Punisher, so I guess there's no hard feelings from the Marvel Universe. Maybe they're giving the guy a mulligan.

In addition to those three names and the protagonist and antagonist, Thor boasts Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colm Feore. And really, when you consider how tough a sell this might turn out to be, that's a good collection of talent for both a more dramatic Marvel movie and for a director like Branagh. So, kudos to Marvel. Hell, they had a harder time casting Iron Man 2.

You know already that this is an appetizer to The Avengers, and after that, who knows? Marvel and Disney are in bed together now, so after the existing contracts expire, Disney will get the rights to all of it. But by then, the comic book movie fascination may have cooled. It'll happen sooner or later, just like everything else.

But I don't believe a Thor sequel would be in the works with Marvel's current Paramount agreement. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think the Avengers arc extends past Iron Man 3. If that's true, no matter how good this film may be, it wouldn't be happening for a long while.

Oh, right. Sorry. My apologies to the great Dolph Lundgren.
