Robert Downey, Jr. Contemplates Doing Nothing
Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 2:59PM
Perhaps it's because this is the most active and publicized part of his career, but
Robert Downey, Jr. seems gassed. Talking to
Entertainment Weekly for a
Sherlock Holmes cover story, RDJ makes some comments that are being interpreted as the actor riding off into the sunset.

I don't believe that's going to happen, because even though he's cashing in like never before, Downey can spin his recent resurgence into better, more challenging roles, the kind that defined his career prior to Iron Man. That could be enough to keep him interested, even if he sounds like he's a little too comfortable at the moment.

“I’ve never had it this good — this is my day in the sun — and I certainly don’t want to look a gift horse in the molars. But [my wife] Susan and I want to begin to be in our lives as much as we are in our jobs. I’d love just to sit here and say, ‘What movie’s playing tonight?’ I’d love to finish the new book about D-day I’m reading. I love painting, I love music.”When you look at Downey's past two years, with Iron Man, Tropic Thunder (and an Oscar nomination), Sherlock, and Iron Man 2, it's a bit more overwhelming than the previous two years, measured by good performances in movies nobody saw, like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Charlie Bartlett. I didn't even remember him in Lucky You until I looked at his filmography. And then there's the physically and emotionally draining part of being a movie star where you just have to be "on" all the time.\ But he's approaching this new phase with a great deal of practicality:
“I’m fucking really good at what I do — and have been for a long time, so I don’t waver on that. But here’s the thing: I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times. It’s something I’m so grateful to have in my palm, and yet I already see its inevitable decay.”"[However], if Sherlock Holmes performs well, I could be busy for the next 5 or 7 or 10 years.”" If, as Downey says, he has no immediate plans for the future - although someone should tell the producers of the big budget Cowboys and Aliens that - then he might find time to read and veg out at home for a while. Just recharge the batteries, Bob.

Kiss kiss bang bang was hilarious, And his role in Charlie bartlett was fantastic {Think he drew a bit from his own experiences}
