Galifianakis Joins 'It's Kind of a Funny Story'

Even though not all that many people say Half-Nelson, the film that officially announced what kind of talent Ryan Gosling as, even fewer saw Sugar, last year's film by the writer-director combo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. However, the pair does have a very promising film coming together for Focus Features called It's Kind of a Funny Story.

The studio (via MovieWeb) announced that principal casting has been completed, and it goes a little something like this: Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Oscar nominee Viola Davis, Jim Gaffigan, Lauren Graham, Zoe Kravitz, and Aasif Mandvi. Man, Galifianakis has had the best year, hasn't he? From The Hangover to casting news for about half a dozen movies (or so it seems) all since June.

It's Kind of a Funny Story is based on the 2006 novel by Ned Vizzini, and it will begin filming next month in someplace called New York City. Here's the official synopsis, if you're interested:

"Sixteen-year-old Craig (to be played by Keir Gilchrist), stressed out from the demands of being a teenager, checks himself into a mental health clinic. There he learns that the youth ward is closed - and finds himself stuck in the adult ward. One of the patients, Bobby (Mr. Galifianakis), soon becomes both Craig's mentor and protégé. Craig is also quickly drawn to another 16-year-old, Noelle (Ms. Roberts). With a minimum five days' stay imposed on him, Craig is sustained by friendships on both the inside and the outside as he learns more about life, love, and the pressures of growing up. Ms. Davis will play Dr. Minerva, the adult ward's staff psychiatrist; Ms. Kravitz will portray Nia, Craig's longtime crush; Mr. Mandvi is cast as Dr. Mahmoud, a hospital psychiatrist; and Ms. Graham and Mr. Gaffigan play Craig's parents, Lynn and George."

I'll point out that this is not an original script by Fleck and Boden, the first time that's been the case for one of their features. However, Fleck has directed episodes of In Treatment this year. But one way to look at this is not as a concession that their stories aren't worth financing, but rather that they can prove themselves in a more competitive studio environment with a project like this. That, in turn, could conceivably give them greater freedom for future projects.

Fleck is a gem of a filmmaker and writer... Simply genius, Half Nelson was a powerful film not marketed and promoted like it should have, Gosling did amazing and really actually started his career in my opinion...

Really looking forward to this, I hope the Fleck Boden team get around to another drama soon afterward..

Im also happy for Galifiankis, the guy has gone undiscovered so long, Hollywood dissapoints but all the job offers he's getting now is very good

The more I read it, the more it impresses me. I don’t know how I ever worked without hilarious and funny things in our life, Life would be so much easier especially when there's a jokes here and there. Being funny is nice because a lot of serious people are lacking with this kind of behavior that is why they are much look older. I would like to thank you for your outstanding blog post. Keep it up! Awesome!
