'Tron,' 'Lost' Writers Consult the Ouija Board

We can roll our eyes at a movie based on Ouija as much as we want - or we can rightly protest that this void was already filled by Tawny Kitaen's Witchboard back in the 80s - but Universal is taking it really seriously. To prove it, the studio has hired Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to turn the completely harmless non-portal to the spirit world piece of particle board into a film.

Horowitz and Kitsis have experience as writers-producers on Lost, which will help in this supernatural action-adventure universe, and they completed work on the Tron Legacy script within the past year or so. No matter what you think of the central concept, it's hard to knock the hire.

Speaking of the concept, The Hollywood Reporter says "It is possible that certain rules of the game — never use it alone, never use it in a graveyard, always say good-bye — figure into the plot." Yes, probably so. In fact, that's pretty much the movie, don't you think?

As board game movies go, I do think this has fewer concrete limits than Monopoly or Candy Land. Because of the very generic nature of the game, I think Peter Berg's Battleship probably has the most upside to be developed as a standalone film.

Having said that, Platinum Dunes, not known for its exemplary productions, is off to a great start here. And with these writers, it's possible the film could get a really good director, not just someone who won't adversely affect a low budget.
