Mandarin Strongly Hinted as 'Iron Man 3' Villain

When are we getting Iron Man 3, exactly? I mean, I know the second one's next year and then there's The Avengers two years later, so maybe 2013? Probably at the earliest. So it's a little strange to hear rumors about the villain for that movie at least three years early.

Faran Tahir, who showed up in the first Iron Man as the leader of the Ten Rings terrorist group, told Moviefone (via Latino Review) that he may be playing Mandarin in Iron Man 3, if for no other reason than that Marvel and Jon Favreau want to move forward with that villain.

"At some point, they want to introduce Mandarin into the storyline and my character, like Mandarin, was the leader of the Ten Rings," Tahir said. "We're leaving it open because, partly, it makes good business sense for us to leave a little bit of uncertainty for people to speculate on."

I dig Mandarin, and I dig Iron Man. I would hope that in the third movie they address Tony Stark's biggest enemy (the bottle), although that can't be the primary thrust of the story. And Mandarin has to be in this series. It's not on the same level of doing a Batman franchise with The Joker, but it's not far off from that.

Continued Fahir:

"[Favreau] has known for a long time where he wants to take it and I don't want to speak for him, but my feeling is that the second movie didn't want to just follow a singular storyline. They wanted to expand the characters to show that it's not a linear saga like Lord of the Rings. There's a linkage somewhere in there, but the big idea is to do at least one more Iron Man movie and then go into The Avengers."

Uhh...yeah. Makes sense to me. Do that. Whether or not it's Fahir remains to be seen, but Mandarin would rule.
