For Your Consideration: 'The Hangover'

Here's the first For Your Consideration ad for The Hangover, which is a pop-up at Variety that First Showing noticed recently. It's not strictly speaking an Oscar ad, but it's definitely gunning for some Golden Globes.

The ad reads that the film should be considered in all categories, as it relates to the Musical or Comedy division. That would include the script, one of the better comedy screenplays in a long, long time, although it has virtually no shot at that category. We somewhat controversially posited the notion that Warner Bros. might push the movie and Zach Galifianakis for Academy Award nominations, and I still think on the Robert-Downey-in-Tropic-Thunder scale, Galifianakis is not that far-fetched a notion, even though he can't possibly win.

The litmus test is pretty simple to me: He gave the best performance in the funniest comedy of the year. If that was the case last year, it should also apply now. It's not about how great an actor may or may not be; it's about this performance.

In Contention has Alec Baldwin on the short list for It's Complicated, and Alfred Molina for An Education. I'm just saying there's likely to be room in the category, and that Galifianakis drove that movie, which might actually resonate and among the many younger Oscar voters.

If not him, then certainly Mike Tyson is a viable alternative.

Isn't funniest movie of the year too subjective a thing to base your comparison on. For example I thought Observe and Report and World's Greatest Dad were the funniest movies of the year, but don't expect that to line up even with a large minority. Also I really don't think it is even one of the better comedy scripts of this year, let alone in a 'long, long time', but that too is fairly subjective.

Well, isn't the whole process subjective?

Just wanted to say to knives that i must respectfully disagree on the Observe and Report being the funniest movie of the year. Maybe I expected to much but i was mildly disappointed with it. I liked it but didn't think it was as good as i thought it would be. On the other hand The Hangover was the hardest i've laughed in a theater since Dumb and Dumber which is the funniest movie of all time in my opinion. I think The Hangover deserves some consideration just because of what it did. The numbers don't lie, nearly $280 million most of which came after its opening weekend. That suggests incredible word of mouth. #1 R rated comedy of all time. Why not give it some nominations. Hell maybe even give it a nom for movie of the year

Wow no offense buddy but Observe and Report sucked!!!

Seth Rogen is annoying and need to go away for a while...

Meanwhile The Hangover was simply brilliant, it was one of the funniest movies of all time no doubt about it... I mean are people forgetting it beat Beverly Hills Cop in financial terms....

The Hangover was brilliant and Zach Galifiankis needs to get a Nomination, honestly, no doubt, some of the best comedic timing and comedic skill in years....

Observe and Report was better than I expected but I expected a steaming pile of crap. I'll give it some kudos for how dark it went in places (and I love East Bound and Down - if only David Gordon Green had directed O&R). Now on to the real debate... Loved the Hangover. It's easily among the ten best films I've seen so far this year but this year is still early. Do I think it deserves Globe noms? Yes. Oscar noms, at the moment yes but come Jan1st probably not. Was Galifianakis great? Absolutely... but so too was Ed Helms. I don't think he deserves an acting nod for supporting actor, because it is traditionally the toughest category. I wouldn't be opposed to it but it ain't gonna happen.

The Supporting categories are always the wild cards, though. Hell...Mira Sorvino has an Oscar because of it. Again, he won't win, and he may not be nominated (probably won't be), but it's more open than the Best Actor race and if it were to receive anything, I think that might be the way it leans.
