J.J. Abrams Producing 'Samurai Jack' Movie

Maybe I missed this before or maybe it's new information, but did you know that J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot are co-producing the feature film version of Samurai Jack? Apparently, that's the skinny from Frederator Films: Abrams has the project lined up at Paramount, which should be good news for fans of animator Genndy Tartakovsky.

As for when this thing might be ready for public consumption...don't get your hopes up for a while. Progress is being described as "glacial," which might be a great adjective for a wintergreen gum ad campaign, but it's not terribly promising in moviedom. Tartakovsky is still writing the script, and then there's the painstaking animation process to follow.

I'm personally not keen on the stereoscopic 3-D format the Samurai Jack movie is said to be exploring, even though it won't be a full 3-D film. I just don't think you need it for the story, and in fact, I don't think the animation style is a very good fit with it. I'd prefer a 90-minute version of the TV show, but that's just me.

If there are any updates on the horizon, we'll share them with you, but in the meantime, rest comfortably knowing that very few J.J. Abrams projects fly off the rails and that some work is taking place, however slow it might be.

I kind of trust Tartakovsky to be aware of the 3D aspect of the film and to write scenes that will utilize that well. What you had in the series were episodes that were really 24 minute movies. It'll be interesting to see if he can hold up the quality of the series in a longer running movie format.
