'New Moon' Director Signs Up for 'The Gardener'

Not surprisingly, New Moon director Chris Weitz is going right back to work for Summit on his follow-up, The Gardener. "There are no werewolves or vampires, just a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles," Weitz told Variety, thereby stripping a cozy $120 million away from his opening weekend.

The film is about the life of an immigrant and his son who live in Los Angeles, written by Eric Eason. I don't know how closely it will mirror 2007's La Misma Luna, but that's an excellent film on the same subject.

Weitz also took the time to refute claims that The Gardener would be his last film, that he was planning on leaving that side of the industry after the treatment he received from New Line while making The Golden Compass. Weitz says he has no plans to stop directing but did acknowledge how rough the Compass experience was, claiming that the film was wrested from his control and re-edited to be a toothless, shorter version by the studio.

"I was treated badly, it was almost like they never read the books. They seemed frightened of offending the right," Weitz said of The Golden Compass, written by noted atheist Phillip Pullman. "[New Moon] was a wonderful experience by comparison."

Especially if he got back-end point, I'm thinking.
