Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 6:37AM Director Talks Casting, Makeup for 'Crow' Reboot
Stephen Norrington was brought in to direct a new version of
The Crow, which is not exactly a remake and certainly not a prequel or a sequel. That led me to call the film a "rebootmagining," because that's how silly all the nomenclature for this stuff has gotten: It's a remake, bottom line.

Still, there are meant to be differences. Just ask Norrington. Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said about a year ago. And now he's talking again, updating both the way the stoy has developed and some casting ideas (though not announcements, exactly).
He tells
io9, "The script is great. We're very excited about it. The Crow is definitely going to happen, we're just getting all the pieces together right now." While adding that the film has not been given the official go-ahead, Norrington is confident that "in a couple months we could have the package together for sure."
As for the casting, we learn that nobody's lined up, although it will most likely be a fairly well-known name. But one thing that's interesting is what Norrington plans to do with the look of the character, no matter who winds up getting the role. "He'll have makeup, but it will be different," admits the director. "The best way to compare it is the first Batman and Batman Begins. In terms of their look and feel and character."
That's a pretty good reference for Norrington to make. People always get up in arms about revisiting favorite movies, but you wouldn't have a Dark Knight if that didn't happen, and you wouldn't have had The Wizard of Oz if twelve other directors hadn't been allowed to do that story first. So we'll see what Norrington can do here. At the very least, it sounds like he's well aware that he has to make it significantly different.

I'll just say this for every role now... Cillian Murphy. I don't think you want someone bulky (Brandon Lee had a great look in the first film) but they still have to be able to pull off the action and I think of the second half of 28 Days Later and can see Murphy in the role.
I'd rubberstamp that.
