Trailer - Ben Stiller in Noah Baumbach's 'Greenberg'
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 10:32PM
Noah Baumbach started out really well as a director with The Squid and the Whale, which he followed with the chalkboard-fingernailing Margot at the Wedding. But something good may have come from that experience: One of his actors from the film, Jennifer Jason Leigh, helped Baumbach put together the story for his new flick, Greenberg. It features an indie turn for Ben Stiller and explains why his been growing his hair out this year, which I'm sure is a load off your mind.

Stiller plays the title character, a guy who, at some point around 40, just decided to do nothing. That's different than someone who just does nothing with no purpose; Greenberg is actively passive. Wrap your head around that, why don't you. But through his nothingness, Greenberg starts to find his true calling, or at least something. Which is more than nothing.
The film co-stars Leigh, Rhys Ifans, and Greta Gerwig, a veteran of true indie film, mumblecore movies. This marks her first encounter with hipster cinema.

As much as this looks like it could be ok, it looks like about every other movie in this genre with interchangable soundtracks and "deep" one-liners.
I think maybe it's time to try something different.
Noah directed at least three films prior to The Squid and the Whale: the terrific post-college malaise study that is Kicking and Screaming (which had that title before a certain Will Ferrell movie) and is now available from Criterion. Definitely recommend this one.
The others are seemingly out of print on DVD. Highball, which I've yet to see, but appears to be marketed similiarly to Swingers and Mr. Jealousy, which reunites a fair amount of the K&S cast in an exploration. If you like K&S, check out Mr. Jealousy.
Love your site!
"Kicking & Screaming" was in heavy rotation in my apartment in the late 90s. Such a unique & hilarious look at college & post-college indecision & love.
He's a talented dude no doubt... Kicking and Screaming my fav for sure. I love his writing whether for his films, co-writing some of Wes Andeson's films or writing small pieces for the new yorker. Have a read of this if interested, bees on blow.
