Tobey Maguire on Possible 'Spidey 4' Villains

Speculation about the villain in Spider-Man 4 has been a steady source of amusement/frustration ever since Sam Raimi and company misfired on the third movie. Heading into the pre-production phase - still ongoing - Raimi had stated that he only wants to use one bad guy in the next movie, and that's how it should in a perfect world.

We thought Lizard would finally get his much-needed day in the sun, and then over the past week or so, there have been all these rumors about Black Cat. Not sure how I feel about two completely independent evildoers in one movie; that hasn't worked out so well before. However, we still don't know for certain what the rogues gallery will consist of next time out, so MTV decided to ask Tobey Maguire which villain he preferred among popular choices The Lizard, Mysterio, and Carnage.

"I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains," Maguire began. "I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a very personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff." Sounds like an unofficial hint to me.

Maguire also says he doesn't know as much about Carnage and that Sam Raimi probably prefers working with characters from the older comics, which would make an appearance by Carnage less likely. And, at least for the fourth movie, that's a good sign. What Peter Parker really needs right now is some solid footing from Raimi. Hopefully, bringing in an ace screenwriter like Gary Ross - even though he trends far from the source material - will give this film some clarity its predecessor lacked.

Not to boil it down to a cliche, but at this moment in the franchise's history, less is more.
