Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 7:05PM Huh? Another 'Amityville Horror' Remake?
Probably because, you know, it worked so well for The Hulk, The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films
are apparently remaking The
Amityville Horror, which was just remade a handful of years ago. Personally, I'm happy, but not
because this movie is happening. I'm happy because I predicted not long ago that we would soon need to use the term "threemake" to
describe remakes of remakes.

I didn't see that term finding a practical use this decade, but here you go. The threemake was reported today by Bloody Disgusting, who reminds us that the Ryan Reynolds version did make $100 million worldwide, and I'll remind you how well horror
movies in general have done this year. Of course, horror is a very, very fickle genre, so there's no guarantee next year will give
us a bumper crop of blood.
The rumor reveals that Dimension may already be discussing the project with a director, and if that's true, it's further along than
we would have thought. That little tidbit would make it seem like the studio wants the film to go into production next year, which
would likely mean a late spring 2011 release. But again, this is just an unconfirmed report right now.
To be sure, the 2005 film was dreadful and didn't justify itself or, for that matter, set itself apart from the competition. That's
no excuse for revisiting it so soon, but that's what threemakes are all about, I guess. If they do go forward with this, there's a
better way to go than what they tried earlier this decade. It should be a much darker, more psychological approach. Maybe Dimension
thinks is a great property to go all Paranormal Activity on us, but I would hope there's some middle ground between the
extremes of a more blood-soaked film and one that is all suggestion.
Wait a minute...why am I trying to give advice to a movie that we clearly don't want or need? Sorry about that. I'll stop now.
