'Hurt Locker' Star as Marvel's Hawkeye?
Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 2:22PM
There has not been much heat surrounding Jeremy Renner following his breakout performance in The Hurt Locker, even though that role could secure him an Academy Award nomination. He'll certainly be strongly considered in the Best Actor category regardless of the five names that wind up in the running.

But now Empire (by way of The Playlist) indicates that Renner has met with Marvel brass about playing the sorely underappreciated archer Hawkeye, a character that will appear in The Avengers and have a cameo in Thor. Obviously, the trend is to spin those brief stints into full-fledged feature projects, and I'm not opposed to Hawkeye at all, even if he's not a household name.
"Hawkeye could be interesting," Renner tells the magazine. "They're going to send me some stuff on it, see what it is. But I think they're pretty awesome, trying to make superhero movies almost plausible and not just some fantasy thing."
We won't get much info on the character even if he's in both of those movies, because Thor is about Thor and The Avengers has already identified its four primary heroes. But if these appearances do lead to a Hawkeye film, it's a pretty compelling origin story, and at least for a while, there's nothing supernatural about the character. He's just a really good archer.
But I think based on the very specific, focused type of soldier he plays in The Hurt Locker, Renner would be a very good choice for a role like this, even if he is just riding in the sidecar for a couple Avengers movies.

Renner is playing Jem in the adaptation of Prince of Thieves (out 2010) and that is absolutely perfect casting...
I hope they go with the Ultimate version of Hawkeye. Much cooler character.
Why don't they just cast Jeremy Renner as Captain America? Now that's perfect casting.
GOOO RENNER, the guy needs to be a household name, and pretty much everyone knows a comic book character of any sort once the film is released , everyone will know him...
Great casting..
