Box Office - $14 Million Wednesday for 'New Moon'
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:01AM
Let's rewind to Wednesday to take a look at the box office totals leading into the Thanksgiving holiday. New Moon was defending its title against not only some strong returning opposition but also some new meat, as well. We estimated a $75 million five-day jaunt for New Moon, and it's certainly on pace after day one, earning $14.3 million on Wednesday. You have to expect Friday and Saturday will remain very strong for the sequel, pushing it to an easy victory. That's $179 million in six days, by the way, good enough to crack the top ten for the year.

In second place on Wednesday was The Blind Side, which posted about $8 million. Looks like another strong weekend there, too. 2012 took third place, far behind the other two, with about $3.5 million. Still, that's $117 million for the disaster movie, and we wrote on Tuesday about how well it's doing overseas. Nobody with something to gain from the success of 2012 is unhappy with its performance.
Ninja Assassin and Old Dogs opened fourth and fifth, both somewhere between 2012 and $3 million, meaning that will be a pretty competitive race straight through the weekend. No film of the three is likely to do more than about $15 million, though, between Wednesday and Monday.
As far as significant movement from Precious and The Fantastic Mr. Fox, both of which could make runs at the top five based on awards season interest and bigger theater counts, there's not much to report. Mr. Fox, which vaulted into over 2,000 theaters after starting in just a handful, put together about $1 million in ticket sales, which isn't a terribly encouraging sign. It might do better as the weekend goes along, but even a whole lot of business should only help it get to about $8 million, $10 million, tops.
Because it's a holiday weekend, I'm not sure how quickly the daily numbers will roll out; we probably won't have a Thursday's totals until Saturday, but you never know. We'll try to remain on the usual schedule of updating you as the weekend goes along, then revealing the final weekend estimates on Sunday.

"Ninja Assassin" is playing about as well as it could have, "Fox", like I predicted, came up short and "Blind Side" will break $100 million (yay!)...what was the last inspirational sports movie to come close to that total, anyway?
Very, very surprised at "Old Dogs" coming up short; I still think that it'll get better this week (kids are still in school on Wed for the most part) and hold up for a while, but that's gotta hurt Disney in some way.
Speaking of which, Disney hasn't had all that great of a year, have they? With the exception of "Up", their releases all either disappointed or tanked thanks to the massive budget (Who in the hell gave a $150 million budget to "G-Force"??).
