Nimrod Antal's "Different Direction" for 'Predators'

Robert Rodriguez is producing and not directing the upcoming Predators reboot. The reason for the confusion, if you still have some confusion about it, is because Rodriguez wrote the script this new film is based on years and years ago, and because we so commonly associate Rodriguez as a one-stop filmmaking shop.

However, for Predators, Rodriguez gave the keys to Nimrod Antal, who directed Vacancy, although the director claims it was his work on the more recent Kontrol that probably convinced Rodriguez to give him the shot. And now he tells Coming Soon that next summer's update is coming together smoothly.

"So far, it's been great, and I think that the fans who may have been underwhelmed by the last two AVP films, I think they're in for a very pleasant surprise."

I think "underwhelmed" barely approaches the way I felt about the AVP movies, but that's just me. Your mileage may vary.

Antal goes on to describe how difficult it is for Predators to both meet expectations and develop its own identity, and says that casting Adrien Brody in the lead role was the first important step toward becoming its own film.

"Again, it was a challenge in finding a balance. I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic. He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they're not 'yolked- out' Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They're all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it's going to play well."

But that brings up the question about Schwarzenegger making a cameo in the reboot. "Time will tell," Antal answered. "We'll see, but we are trying to stay with the original as far as the monster and the atmosphere and the tone of the film, but we are trying to do something new and contemporary and feels fresh."

That sounds like a no.
