Raimi Signs Director Based on Sci-Fi Short Film

Sam Raimi looks to build on the slight momentum of his Ghost House Pictures by picking up Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Alvarez to direct a sci-fi movie of his choosing. Why does he get that kind of luxury? Because Raimi, along with a lot of other people, were knocked out by Alvazrez' short film, Panic Attack!

The short popped up online recently, and according to the Uruguayan paper El Pais (by way of Film Junk), Raimi contacted Alvarez about making a Hollywood film. During the initial 90-minute phone call, Raimi invited the director to Los Angeles, and as part of that trip, the upcoming film was developed, at least in part. It's unclear whether or not the film will be a feature version of Panic Attack! or if it will be something else, but based on the estimated budget ($30 - $40 million), it's probably easiest to roll in those same concepts that made the short work so well. Plus, as an unproven commodity, why risk money on a new story?

If this sounds like District 9, that's because, as they say in sports, this is a copycat league. Here's the vaunted short film; do you think it's worth giving Alvarez a $30 million toybox? Of course, it's reported that he made the short for just a few hundred bucks, so take that into consideration.

Pretty cool... I wonder if anyone sued him for using the music from 28 Days Later.
