Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to Host Academy Awards

There were two Academy Awards updates today. The first was that the telecast's producers had asked Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. to host the show together. They passed, although we had kind of championed Stiller for the gig based on his experience as a presenter. The combo with Downey could have been fantastic.

The second update is the producers' next tag team: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will emcee the Oscars in March, a pairing of two of the most experienced Saturday Night Live hosts in history, if that counts for anything. "Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past, and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event," said Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman in a statement.

The one issue you run into with Baldwin is obvious: Conservative media outlets will use the 30 Rock star to illustrate how liberal Hollywood is and how out of touch show business and celebrities are with mainstream Americans. It's the kind of potential headache I'm not sure AMPAS and ABC want given the lower ratings the Oscars has turned in over recent years. I don't think you'd run into as much of that backlash if it were just Martin hosting.

It also doesn't show a whole lot of forward thinking I believe bringing in a unit like Stiller and Downey might. Martin's done this a couple of times and Baldwin is on a great show that doesn't get as many viewers as it should. Hard to see this as really lifting the viewership a whole lot. But they should be fun to watch, no matter what the rating say.

Well screw the conservative outlets if they want to diss Alec Baldwin, I mean the Academy Awards is not the venue and the Oscars are not the place in which to attack Baldwin politically....

I dont understand either how actors and show buisness and celebrities are out of touch with mainstream Americans, they are involved with issues such as environmental issues, etc...

This combo seems cool, I dunno why I never thought of Alec Baldwin before, he'll do great and Steve Martin can do no wrong....
---Still wish Robin Williams woulda got chosen......

Gervais at the Globes will murder these two even though the actual show is far inferior... I do like Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin though (Martin more so about ten years before I was born).

I hope that Alec Baldwin reads Colin's open letter to Steve Martin directly to Steve Martin as part of the festivities...

To SEAN: Just some thoughts...opinions....

Most everyday mainstream Americans aren't involved in the same issues as celebs. Now you only listed "environmental issues" as an actual issue...not sure what else "etc" is going to cover. Celebs have the luxury of having way more income than mainstream Americans, and that gives them (the celebs) more free time to devote to things like environmental issues (again...your only example), or "Freeing Tibet" or adopting African children, or saving dolphins, or stopping apartheid, or ....whatever.

Most mainstream Americans deal with going to a job everyday, putting food on the table, gas in their cars, paying a mortgage, feeding their kids...and really...just surviving. Sure, they may know of "environmental issues"....hear about them on the news...read about them on some blog....they may even recycle their plastics and paper and drive a Prius....but that's about as far as it goes. Most mainstream Americans are too busy living their everyday lives. Their thoughts and actions are dictated by it. Celebs with money like Alec Baldwin don't have that perspective....and if they ever did before they became rich and famous....they've most likely lost it. It's the way of the world. Over time, in the same situation, we'd all probably lose it.

And really...what is the definition of "mainstream America"? "Mainstream" is basically the "dominant characteristic". Celebs are not the dominant characteristic. They are a minute percentage of Americans. The dominant characteristic of Americans are the average Joe's who are getting by.

Is Alec Baldwin out of touch with mainstream America? Probably. And so is Kelsey Grammer (first Republican celeb that came to mind)....so are most celebrities.
