Amy Adams Finds John Hillcoat's 'Promised Land'

John Hillcoat's The Road didn't make a huge impression in its first weekend in theaters, making a little over $1.5 million in limited release. Hard to blame Hillcoat, though, for a movie that people expected to see a year ago, even if it does have a few problems.

He's moving on, however, and by the cast he's assembled for his next film, it's clear that Hillcoat will come out of The Road with a higher profile and probably more clout. Collider say a new poster for the adaptation of Matt Bondurant's The Wettest County in the World at the American Film Market, which touts a brand new star. Amy Adams will join Ryan Gosling and Shia LaBeouf in the Depression-era saga now called The Promised Land.
Gosling and LeBeouf will play bootleggers and brothers in the film, and Collider notes there's not a major female character in the book, so her role is kind of hard to pin down. I sure hope she plays a Disney princess zapped out of a fairy tale and into the Depression - talk about a fish out of water story!
Short of that, just let her do anything she wants; I don't think you'll get many complaints.
The project is not set up at a studio/distributor at this point and financing is apparently still coming together, not that a production like this will have a lot of difficulty attracting money. The book garnered a pretty good reputation last year, with Salon remarking, "Bootlegging brothers, get-rich-quick schemes and a sensational murder trial make The Wettest County in the World a riveting read."
