Galifianakis Inks Another Deal, Joins 'Puss in Boots'

Didn't I just say Zach Galifianakis has had a great year, with The Hangover leading to several big casting announcements in the past four months? I'm sorry if that sounds a bit like an admonition, but with five new projects handed to him since July, maybe he should get a stern talking to. Let's just hope they're up to snuff; none of them sound bad on the surface, so maybe it's the perfect storm of comedy scripts.

Galifianakis has said yes once again, joining the cast of the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots. Ever since the Antonio Banderas character was introduced in Shrek II, there has been talk of him getting his own movie and possibly a start-up franchise. Why it's taken so long, I have no idea. The Hollywood Reporter says a new version of the script is being written, so clearly DreamWorks didn't like what it had to this point.

Banderas and Salma Hayek are already on board and Galifianakis will voice Humpty Dumpty in the film, which will serve as a kind of origin story for Puss in Boots, the best character in the whole Shrek universe, as far as I'm concerned. It's good casting, I suppose, to have Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty, and I hope that's the case with the other films as well - Due Date with Robert Downey, Dinner for Schmucks for director Jay Roach, It's Kind of a Funny Story (which stands out here as a drama), Town House with Amy Adams, and of course, Hangover 2.

A little bit of Zach goes a long way, and you'd hate to see him accept his new found status and as a consequence shoo away his audience through overexposure. They sound like good opportunities, so maybe he's being really judicious in his decisions.

Puss in Boots will hit theaters in almost exactly two years - November 4, 2011.

I have been a fan of Zach Galifianakis' stand up for years, but until The Hangover, he had never really had any crossover success. And he's been around for a long time now.

I almost get the impression that he is just striking while the iron is hot by commiting to as many projects as he can now in case he can't ever replicate the success of The Hangover. On the one hand, I hope he is making wise choices and that all of these projects will pay off for him and grant him a long career. But, on the other hand, even if they all end up tanking, I'm glad he will be able to cash in for a while on his immense talent. He deserves it.
