Aykroyd, Faris, JT in Talks for 'Yogi Bear'

If these things lived in a vacuum, it might be a different story. On its own, there's nothing wrong or inherently evil about making a movie based on The Flintstones or Scooby Doo or even Rocky & Bullwinkle. But when you add them all up (and pay attention to the success rate), you start to get a bad taste in your mouth. That's probably why I was so opposed to this update initially.

I enjoyed Yogi Bear as a kid, although it wasn't an all-time favorite. And because it has a big presence in the pop culture firmament, a movie version isn't a stretch. It just seems that way since we've been inundated by so many of them already. Entertainment Weekly has some casting updates, and I'm not really thrilled about those, either.
Anna Faris would play a nature documentary filmmaker in the live-action/CGI combo. Great comic timing on that girl, but when she's off the mark, she's really off the mark. Dan Aykroyd may voice Yogi, which at this stage is preferable to having him on camera for any length of time, and Justin Timberlake might voice Boo-Boo. That's a bit of a head-scratcher. I'm sure he could do it, but there are likely dozens of other voice actors who might be better suited for it. Say, Seth Green, for example.
Yogi Bear will film in New Zealand beginning next month, so this casting will probably wind up sticking out of necessity. Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) will direct, and I'm OK with that. In fact, I'm perfectly fine with the idea of a Yogi Bear movie. I don't mind keeping the old stuff alive for a new generation. I will not condone a live-action/CGI flick until I see it, though, because those tend to go south in a hurry. But I'm not in love with the casting, it's safe to say.
"A remake of Yogi Bear seems to be an incredibly unnecessary project but with these inspired casting choices perhaps a good movie will prevail."
