'Hurt Locker' Wins Best Feature at Gotham Awards
Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 1:35AM
Time will tell if this is the first major hurdle for The Hurt Locker to overcome on the way to what
would be a major (industry) upset at the Academy Awards, but Kathryn Bigelow's gritty and fantastic Iraq War movie picked up the
equivalent to Best Picture at The Gotham Awards, winning Best Feature in a ceremony last night.

The Hurt Locker, which only grossed $12 million in the US since its release mid-year is nevertheless one of the year's best reviewed movies and will very likely play a role in the Oscar nominations, if not the awards themselves. The ten-movie format in the Best Picture category means it's almost certain that the film gets in that list, and Bigelow has insinuated herself in the discussion for Best Director, particularly since early reviews for Invictus and The Lovely Bones have not been overwhelming.
In addition to Best Picture, Hurt Locker also won for its ensemble cast. It could have won more, but The Gothams are a slimmed down awards show, something that I'd like to see more of across the country.
