Monday, December 14, 2009 at 8:39PM Huh? Tobey Maguire In Talks for Bilbo Baggins?
If nothing else, it's interesting fodder, but I really don't think there's a strong chance that it happens. Connecting a few seemingly unrelated threads, Latino Review has put forth the notion that Tobey Maguire could wind up playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. It's not a bad rumor at all, even if Tobey does seem a little too old for it.

Here are the threads: Maguire apparently said at a Brothers press event last month that the director he'd like to work with next is Guillermo del Toro, adding something to the effect of "we may have something in the near future." Then Latino Review figured it was impossible because of the back-to-back schedule for Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5, but Sony sources indicate that won't happen, and there will be the usual gap between them.
Neither of those things says Maguire is playing Bilbo Baggins to me, but more sources tell Latino Review that CAA, Maguire's representation, is discussing the role with the producers. Again, even that doesn't mean very much, because there's no offer anywhere. In fact, because of the rather slippery nature of making The Hobbit right now - MGM's being fleeced by the end of next month, and Warner will co-distribute the film with whatever outfit picks up Metro's holdings - Maguire (or his agent) might price himself out of the equation.
The conjecture is that WB wouldn't greenlight a project of this magnitude without a major star, but that's not accurate. Stars are fading, the studios know it, and you can sell Transformers with Shia LaBeouf, Twilight with Robert Pattinson, or even Lord of the Rings with Elijah Wood or Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. None of those guys were A-list talent when they were handed the keys to ginormous franchises.
What's going to sell tickets is the title. If you could find a groundskeeper who could act, you could cast him as Bilbo Baggins and The Hobbit would still be huge; Tobey Maguire does not bring a fresh flock of millions with him. That doesn't mean the studio and Jackson/del Toro will go with an unknown, just that they could.
We'll see if anything further develops here, but as much as I like Latino Review's reporting, this one sounds a bit hard to swallow to me.
