Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 6:40AM 'Up in the Air' Leads Golden Globe Nominees
There is one glaring omission committed by he Hollywood Foreign Press Association in this year's Golden Globe nominations, and we'll discuss that in a moment. First, here are the film nominees, and remember, the Globes are split into dramatic and musical/comedy awards for Best Picture and the two lead acting awards, but not at all for director, screenplay, or the supporting acting honors, because apparently those are less significant to the success of each type of film. (Maybe that's more than one glaring omission, then.)

But how does The Hurt Locker get acknowledged for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, but Jeremy Renner - the only true nominee in this category through August - go completely overlooked in favor of Tobey Maguire in Brothers? Perhaps a better way to look at it is this: Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock get two nominations, and even Julia Roberts lands one for a movie nobody but the HFPA remembers - over Zooey Deschanel in the multiple nominee (500) Days of Summer - but the leading actor in The Hurt Locker is forgotten? That's terrible.

I'd say Up is a bigger omission from anything other than score is a bigger omission than Renner. I do find it interesting that they gave District 9 a nomination in screenplay.
The globes are a joke, I'm not surprised at any inclusion or omission. They fall in love with people (Meryl Streep who is great but hasn't deserved a nomination in years and now Robert Downey by the looks of it, who is also great but I'm not sure worthy in Holmes, only time will tell).
The whole comedy/musical category is nonsense, and this year underscores it as much as ever. Of course, last year, there were six nominees in some categories, which is pointless. I haven't seen It's Complicated, but it sure looks like a place-filler to me, a film they used to round out the categories. I don't mind Bullock in The Proposal or Blind Side, but both?
Having seen Nine, which I don't think is likely to win any major award, the best performance is Marion Cotillard. But why is it relegated to the lesser category because she sings? It's a dramatic performance, and a damn good one. Even stranger is that she won in the same category for the completely laugh-free La Vie en Rose. It diminishes her work because it's so hard to justify that the bonus category is on the same level as the dramatic ones. If it were, they would group them that way all the way down the list - Best Director, Musical or Comedy; Best Screenplay, Drama.
I can't speak to Downey, but he's very good at comedy. They're clearly going for laughs with it, so he might be up to snuff. Even still, there's a lack of depth in the comedy category as a general rule. If not for the annual musical that wins everything, they'd never fill the damn categories.
OMG what the FUCK is this garbage...I don't think Ive ever seen the Globes fail so utterly horribly... (excuse my language) (actually no don't excuse it, I'm pissed off!)
How the fuck does pretty much one of the worst actress in the world who makes a lot of money each fucking movie (JULIA ROBERTS) earn a fucking nomination for Duplicity????
---She was good at some point like 10 years ago but she is one of the worst actresses in the bizness today, and she earns a whole lotta money is her price tag...
WOW & a complete snub for breakout star Jeremy Renner??? This is just horrid! I havent heard so much praise for such a breakout performance from a young actor outta nowhere in quite a while....I can't believe it...
---I mean a Nom for Tobey Maguire, I mean freakin Spiderman???? Gimi a break alright, I saw the film, he did well yes, & broke out of his typecast a bit & we saw a side we hadn't really before..... but OVER JEREMY RENNER!!!!
----Wow guess what no one even saw Brothers neither....this is just studio politics at its finest!
Robert Downey nominated for the utter simple minded popcorn fun Sherlock Holmes (haven't seen but I'm guessing) what kind of bulshit is this .....
---Like honestly are they serious, I know Downey is having such a good laugh somewhere out there, I just know it...big Downey fan but this is not deserving of a nomination none out of the slightest WOW
Meryl Streep a nomination for It's Complicated, you've got to be kidding that's just wow Im speechless, I understand she's 60 and doing romantic comedies which is pretty astounding, but it's because she's taken care of herself and her skin, she looks youthful and in her 40's, its not a big deal, good genes or whatever, but that doesn't warrant a Nom
Sandra Bullock with nomintion for her films are a bit surprising if you ask me. I mean The Blind Side was pefectly executed and released but I think others like Abbie Cornish in Bright Star or Audrey Tatou in Coco before Chanel should have been considered...
-For The Proposal I mean that made a boatload of money so I guess that is ok, I cant think of someone to replace her in that category from the 2009 films
OK SO GOOD THINGS (if there is truly anything good about this)
-500 days & The Hangover got recognized!!! Solid right choices!!
--The Last Station got recognized as well as Helen Mirren & Christopher Plummer
--Carey Mulligan star is shining brighter as well as Emily Blunt, solid choices
--Joe Gordon Levitt, the kid is the future lol
--Tarantino for Screenplay for Inglorious!!! THANK YOU!!! (I called it months ago)
--Christoph Waltz for INGLOURIOUS THANK YOU!!! (called it as well months ago)
--Stanley Tucci for The Lovely Bones, its time he deserves real recognition at last
--Vera Farminga & Julianne Moore, both I was worried would get snubbed but didn't!
--Colin Firth for A Single Man, i was beginning to worry he wouldn't for a while so yeah
THE BAD (replacements that should be executed right now by the Globes)
Downey for Best Actor Comedy (out)-----(in) Zach Galifiankis The Hangover (I mean how didnt this happen, I predicted in would for Globes and Academy Awards, complete bullshit!!!!!!! AHHHHHH
Tobey Maguire for Best Actor Drama (out)------(in) Jeremey Renner The Hurt Locker (all I have to say is if you don't agree with me on this one, go &*%^ yourself) :)
Its Complicated for Best Screenplay (out)------(in) 500 Days of Summer Best Screenplay (they love Nancy Myers & she's been here before & I bet this isn't her finest work, so what the hell is this there for.???)
Julia Roberts Best Actress Comedy (out) ------ (in) Zooey Deschanel (give me a break I mean Julia Roberts ughhh, she seems like a nice person but she is just horrible at acting, she once got booed offstage live doing a Broadway show, I mean her films are just bad as well, while Zooey was the epitome of that character, she embodied that character, Globes you fail)
NOW SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT (some maybe's just for people to think about, some are real long shots but hey, why not)
Foreign Language films (perhaps)
Coco Before Chanel
Best Film Drama (perhaps any of the following, not in any order)
An Education
Bright Star
Crazy Heart
Invictus
The Lovely Bones
A Single Man
Best Actress Drama (perhaps)
Saoirse Ronan - The Lovely Bones
Best Director (perhaps)
Lee Daniels - Precious
Original Score (real long shot)
Where the Wild Things Are..... exchange for ....Away We Go
Original Song
Away We Go --- Alexi Murdoch "All My Days"
Best Screenplay
Jane Campion -- Bright Star
So yes I'am now exhausted & whomever has read this, is probably too, but hopefully I was clear...I had more to say but forgot to be honest, lol...
---But please feel free to comment & post what you think about my OPINIONS, they are just my OPINIONS, which I think are right! LOL :)
Oh forgot to say....
Some of these choices just goes to show "studio politics" and "favoritism" of the big studios with people/actors/directors/producers with whom they know & have a relationship.... ie Robert Downey, Julia Roberts
They fail to get to know & recognize new actors and people ie Jeremy Renner, Abbie Cornish, Zooey Deschanel, Zach Galifiankis ...Of course they do at time but others they don't...I mean it sucks
They did get something right though, Ricky Gervais hosting... should be good for more laughs than even the big joke that is half of the nom list. I know we're all talking Renner (deservedly so) but let's not forget about Anthony Mackie too who was also great. I'd also for the sake of argument include more than just Waltz (who was brilliant) from IB for the acting noms, like Mélanie Laurent and Michael Fassbender (an amazing talent who should have been recognized for Hunger, one of the best films of last year).
No disagreement from me on any of that. The only thing I'll add is that it's a tougher road for Mackie because Supporting isn't split. When ten actors up for two awards, I can't see Renner missed the mark when everything else from the film was nominated.
Very valid bitching from all, the Globes have always been a bit of a star f*ck fest.
One interesting note; this has to be the first time in awards history that an ex husband and wife have been in competition with each other for Best Director. Haven't seen his yet but her work was, in my opinion, the best I've seen this year.
