Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 7:02PM Damn, The New 'Iron Man 2' Trailer Rocks
Ah, the sound of silence. The new trailer for Iron Man 2 has a hell of a lot going for it, but it
definitely picks up when the music dies.
They pack an awful lot into two-and-a-half-minutes, and this is an outstanding trailer for
this kind of movie. The comedy's there, the action shows up, you see the major players, and it continues enough of the storyline
from the first film.
And now I'll leave you to it...

I believe we have the movie that may beat the Dark Knights record. Not that it is definitely going to be better, although it looks INCREDIBLE it has a broader audience and has momentum building behind it. Can not wait!
$530 million? I don't think so. Too many things opening after it. Dark Knight opened in mid-July, and that's about the end of the massive blockbusters. Tougher to pull something like that off in early May.
The villain(s) which we all know is so crucial to comic book films doesn't look credible enough to me... everything else looks great don't get me wrong but mickey and scarlett are hardly heath's joker. Looking forward to it no doubt but have my concerns.
I think Avatar will be the movie to beat The Dark Knight; maybe even Titanic's record will fall.
the only reason i think it wont beat the dark knight is that the joker playing off that anarchist role really played to teen and young boys who repeatedly went to see it because they love the idea of a guy totally not caring about rules and rebelling. Which is what teen culture is basically about. So it really had a grasp on that. Iron Man will do good but its not going to touch dark knight i dont think. But the trailor does look good. War hammer and iron man should be fun together.
I think Avatar will be lucky to get halfway to Titanic's record. There's a reason only one other movie has made $500 million, and it's not likely to be repeated anytime soon. Titanic did it in part because it was in theaters for a year, and that doesn't happen now. It just doesn't. Too much money to be made on DVD.
Dark Knight was the perfect storm. It was well-received, had normal summer movie box office build-up, crazy anticipation because of Heath Ledger, and one of the most familiar good guy-bad guy confrontations in 20th century American literature. And still nobody thought it would make that much money.
Avatar, even though critics like it and fanboys are excited, has a long way to go to work into the mainstream. For instance, I'm catching a midnight show and ordered tickets less than 36 hours before the screening. And it's the only 3-D premiere on this entire side of town. No problem getting a seat. Because it will only be in theaters four or five months, and because you have to make a silly amount of money in ten to fourteen days to even cross $400 million overall, I just don't think Avatar has what it takes to do that.
I mentioned this when Dark Knight was going after the record: Titanic faced zero $100 million movies for six months after it was released, and I think only five movies that made $50 million total. Again, that's over a six-month stretch. There was no competition. Avatar has two $100 million movies - Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks - the next week. And the January schedule is busier than normal. And February has a lot of genre competition for Avatar. And March is even bigger than that. Look at the start Transformers and New Moon got, and neither one came close to Dark Knight. I'm not saying it's impossible, just that in the current environment, it's not the sort of thing you can predict with any confidence at all.
Colin you make alot of good points and i agree with you that this will not come close to The Dark Knight. But as far as having to much competition right behind Iron Man 2, lets not forget in 2007, 3 movies that opened in May all made over $300 million. I think it is less about having alot of competition and more about just making a quality movie that has a huge buzz surrounding it and great word of mouth. The Dark Knight did an incredible job marketing the movie on Heath Ledgers performance and when he died that is what blew that movie up. Everyone had to see his performance even though they could careless before he died. Ofcourse his performance lived up to those expectations and the movie received great word of mouth because of it. I know i didn't even know about the movie til his death and thats when all you heard about was Heath Ledger as the Joker. That drew me and my crew to the theater for the midnight opening and we certianly weren't the only ones. I think Iron Man 2 could get to $400 million and it will probably be the biggest hit of the summer domestically. Everyone loved the first one and sequels of big blockbusters always do better. That right there puts it over the $319 million the first one did. No way it comes within $100 million of The Dark Knight. As far as Avatar goes i think it will be similar to Titanic in terms of how it makes its money. I see it having a bit of a disappointing opening weekend but this is going to be another great story from Mr. Cameron and it will get good word of mouth. I think it will show great legs and make over $300 million domestically. I think it will make most of its money after opening weekend kind of like The Hangover
I'm not saying it won't be in the same range again, just that the competition in May makes it very tough for one of the first movies in a typical summer to have that kind of reach. Dark Knight had a Titanic-like August and September when it came out, and as you said, Iron Man eventually lost some audience, repeat or otherwise, to Indy Jones.
