Robert Downey, Jr. picked up a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Sherlock Holmes, and who knows if it was obligatory or if he earned it. He's great, better when he has free reign to create his own character, and even though his Holmes isn't the Holmes we're used to, it sure looks like it has RDJ's fingerprints on it. So maybe it's a legit grab in this case.

The film also has good reviews so far. Yeah, we're ten days out, so the 88% at Rotten Tomatoes almost certainly won't hold, but it's a good start for Downey, Guy Ritchie, and the rest of the principals. It opens on the 25th, and I think its box office really depends on what Avatar brings in over the next few days. Not an absolute duplication of audience, but if Avatar draws a huge crowd, then Holmes could start slower. Christmas is a better box office holiday than Thanksgiving, which says to me people can't wait to not see their family for part of the day.
