Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 9:31AM 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy on Blu-ray Next April
Because I'm not the world's biggest Lord of the Rings fan, I guess I just assumed this little development had already happened, but the trilogy will be released on Blu-ray on April 6th, just in time for Christmas!

Titled Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, the nine-disc Blu-ray will set you back 100 bones and includes all three theatrical versions of the films, plus over seven hours of bonus material, including, as I understand it, Peter Jackson's season as the runner-up on The Biggest Loser.
Actually, Video Business says "The supplemental package will contain mostly special features that were on the various DVD versions of the movies, including featurettes that were originally on LordoftheRings.net." So what's different, besides the picture quality? Hi-def trailers, like the one featured below.
That's not worth $100 to me, but if you've seen the garbage I waste money on, you'd realize I'm in no position to judge you for this. I will say, though, that since these are just the theatrical versions and there are plans to put the extend-o-matic edits on Blu-ray as well (at some undetermined date), if I were to part with a Franklin, I'd just put it off for a little while longer.
Oh, the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings is due out the next week, incidentally, so if you want a Blu-ray of that, you can pick it up on April 13th.Here's the Hi-Def trailer from Yahoo!:

Yeah...theatrical versions...I'll wait
Because they announced that the extended versions are coming out at a later date, they just lost a sale from me.
Ironically though, I'm going to look at Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated film the week after; never seen it, and I've heard some good things about it.
I'm afraid I don't see what's so fabulous about Blu-ray. It makes everything TOO clear; you can TELL the sets are fake. It's so obnoxious and distracting. So I'm gonna pass on this, especially since I already spent a fortune on the DVDs and Extended Versions. I'm all set.
Yeah, wait, what? Theatrical versions? Why bother at this point? Guess I will keep waiting.
