Over 60 Official Submissions for Best Song Oscar

The official list of submissions for Best Song at the Academy Awards has been released. Unlike previous Oscar lists we've shown you over the past month or so, these aren't whittled down from a longer list. They're just the songs submitted for Oscar consideration, which is why when you see that Hannah Montana The Movie is on here five times, you shouldn't throw something at your monitor. Disney loves this award, so the studio almost always submits a gazillion tunes. In fact, Mickey has ten of these submissions if I counted correcly, 11 if I didn't. So that's almost 20% of the list. But Disney movies also have a lot of songs, so it's not a disproportionate amount on those terms. Hannah Montana had quite a few tunes, so why not submit them? You can read the official Academy rules on song submissions if you really, really have nothing better to do over at Alt Film Guide. One song seems to be missing, "Colorblind" from Precious, which is a Mary J. Blige song. It could be that insipid rule that the song had to be written expressly for the movie, even if it had never been published or recorded before. That's what kept "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge! out of the running; it was written for Romeo + Juliet, but was never used. There's no way to know if these songs were all written for the movie, so I don't get that rule.
