'Hangover 2' Heading to Thailand?

The sequel to The Hangover - available now on DVD and Blu-ray, incidentally - will be in theaters on Memorial Day weekend, 2011. That's a slight shift by Warner Bros. from this summer's early June release, one that really helped the film gain traction in summer's less active second month. I'm certain the massive success of the first film makes Warners think it can play anywhere, and they're probably right. Why that never applies to Harry Potter or Christopher Nolan, I have no idea. So we have a release date and we know the cast and writer-director Todd Phillips will return but we don't have a story. That's OK, right? I mean, the first one didn't really have much of one, either. Actually, The Hangover has a pretty involved story, loaded with tons of comedic call-backs. That it appears so simple is one of its strengths. CHUD says part two may well take the three best friends that anybody could have to Thailand. Well, sure, that's great...but only if they have as much fun as Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale in Brokedown Palace. Ahh...those were good times, huh? The concept here is gold. As Devin Faraci speculates, "I imagine Thai ladyboys are a certainty, but how about the more unseemly side of Thai sex tourism? Will Zack Galifiniakis end up with a child bride instead of a baby?" All this and more, I would think. The location is an excellent choice specifically because it hasn't been used for a movie like this yet. You can make it virtually the same film again and with the exotic new destintation, not only can you get away with it (if you're coming in without wanting to do a stitch of work) but you can also let Thailand dictate some of the wacky misadventures. And an R rating seems too obvious given all the trouble to be had there. Can't wait for that Gary Glitter prison cameo...(OK, so Glitter is out of prison, and his conviction was in Vietnam, but still.) The script apparently has a good deal in common with the Old School 2 screenplay, which will probably continue to go unused by Phillips because it also prominently featured wacky Thai fun.
