'Toy Story 3' Gets the IMAX Treatment

It isn't totally unexpected that Disney and Pixar might push to get Toy Story 3 in IMAX theaters next summer, and now that deal is done. CNN recived news that IMAX and Disney will partner up next summer to put the long-awaited threequel on the enormo screen on June 18th, the same date it opens in standard format theaters.

"We have always envisioned the Toy Story franchise as an ideal fit for The IMAX Experience and we're very happy to finally turn that vision into a reality," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "This film also fits nicely into our 2010 lineup, ensuring that families will be able to start the summer holidays with a fun Disney release in IMAX."

Speaking of that 2010 lineup, IMAX now has Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek Forever After, Twilight: Eclipse, Inception, and TRON: Legacy in addition to Toy Story. All the animated flicks are in 3-D, and we know Alice in Wonderland and Tron are, as well.

But that schedule is pretty packed in the summer. Shrek opens the third week of May, then there's Toy Story, which is followed two weeks later by Twilight, which is followed three weeks later by Inception. Usually, part of the appeal of the IMAX releases for these films is that they last a little longer. They have to in many cases, because of the limited number of screens. The Twilight: Eclipse thing makes no sense, as we pointed out last week.

I wonder how Disney is handling this, though. Do they give it a full run like Avatar is getting because it will only have a short exclusive run or - and IMAX has done this before - does it stick the movie in that June 18th position and try to bring it back in August or September when the picking are a little slimmer?
