Peter Berg On the Aliens in His 'Battleship' Movie
Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 10:59AM
Perish the thought, but director Peter Berg says we're definitely getting aliens in Battleship, which could be the most strangest idea in a while. We brought it up a while ago, and it still seems like Berg et al are simply overcooking this idea for no reason. CHUD has a ton of details about the project, so if you're really curious about all the minor points, take a trip over there.

In addition to the reveal that some of the sequences will be in 3-D and the line "You sank my battleship" is definitely in the script, Berg describes the aliens as being similar to humans, and their planet is of interest to them ecologically. They're known as The Regents (which sounds like a great name for a doo-wop band), and they'll be visualized as a combination of actors and CGI. Think Davey Jones, but not Davy Jones.
Writes CHUD's Devin Faraci, "The Regents don't have super technology. Their weapons are ballistics-based. While their boats are inserted into Earth's atmosphere through flight, once they get to the water they stay on the water." No exit strategy? Another one of Vizzini's classic blunders on proud display.
Berg says that, to him, aliens make more sense than fighting a terrestrial foe. Here's his logic:

"The idea of finding a credible context for that eluded me. The idea of a film where America goes to war against China, or a movie where America goes to war against England or Australia or Japan, one of the countries that has a credible navy, felt like it would borderline on some kind of jingoistic American military exercise I couldn't get my head around. I like the idea of something bigger, larger than life and the challenge it presented."That all sounds daffy to me, as silly as a Benny Hill sketch. Why, why, why?

... so let me get this straight - the aliens have the technology to travel light years through space but don't have the power to fly in the earth's atmosphere? Is Dean Devlin writing this script!?
Is the fact that this is "Battleship" supposed to sell tickets? I am pretty sure no one gives a shit.
I was inclined to give a shit before the aliens. To me, a WWII naval battle movie could be very good, using Master and Commander as a blueprint, of course.
Agreed, Colin -- I'd love to see a WWII naval combat movie with actual battleships hurling shells the size of Volksawagons at each other. Hopefully someday someone gets it done.
Sure, a WWII naval battle movie would be great. I think someone could figure out how to make a movie like that without needing Battleship the game to base it on though. Will there be a big grid on board the ship to put pegs in?
This almost sounds like an Uwe Boll idea...
