Thursday, December 24, 2009 at 3:25PM Red Band Trailer for 'Repo Men' with Jude Law
I'm not the first and I won't be the last to point out that there's a jarring similarity between the events of Repo Men and Repo: The Genetic Opera. The movies go about things differently, but organ repossession in the future? Kind of rare to see two of those movies pop up within a couple years.

The scope of each films is different, however. One's a lower budget horror musical and one's a dystopic action flick with Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Liev Schreiber. Plus, Genetic Opera was not exactly a major hit, so it's not as if the majority of the audience for Repo Men will be aware of some obvious comparisons.
On its own, Repo Men looks OK, not great. Maybe Surrogates level sci-fi. There's a twist in this Red Band trailer, and that might be where the real action is, but I'm not sure this jumped up too many pegs on the must-see list for 2010. Incidentally, Red Band in this case means language, violence, and brief nudity.
The film opens April 2nd, a week after Clash of the Titans. I don't see it toppling Perseus.

It's a shame they couldn't have positioned this in time for the health-care reform debate. It might have gotten a bit of topical buzz off of that. Organ repossession isn't some new sci-fi thing, "Max Headroom" was on it back in the 80's. They just need to play it up more as absurdist black comedy. There's no way you can take this seriously.
