Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 5:29AM 'Flash Gordon' Rumors: Reynolds, Worthington
Yesterday, we told you about a rumor that began life at Star magazine that Kirsten Dunst would be axed in Spider-Man 4 so the series could move on to Anne Hathaway. No truth to it, but it's out there. Today, it's Flash Gordon, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington, and Hollyscoop.

I'm not so sure I like that font (or is it fount?) of information for this kind of news, but here's the skinny from "an industry source": "Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground.”
Pass the salt, please.
Director Breck Eisner is reportedly safe from the guillotine on this project for now, although he recently parted ways with another remake (The Creature from the Black Lagoon). He has yet another update in theaters early next year with The Crazies. I think it's obvious that this has to be a star-driven vehicle, because while the name probably has plenty of recognition, I'm not sure the most desired moviegoing demographic really gets it. Even judging by the cheestastic 80s movie, that would be older than the audience producers would like to attract.
I highly doubt Reynolds would want a third possible franchise right now. That just means bouncing from tentpole to tentpole to tentpole with no time in between for anything else. I could be wrong, but I would assume he's quite happy with what he has. Worthington is in demand, too, but he's looking for franchises, so that would make more sense. I still don't think I like the source or the rumor itself, really, but file it away.
The movie itself isn't on the radar until 2012, so we may not know who the savior of the universe will be for quite a while.

I'm really surprised that George Lucas doesn't want a crack at this...
I would say wait and see what "John Carter of Mars" looks like. Then they'll know if they need to modernize it, like they sort of did on the Sci-Fi Channel, or to really give it an all-out epic/romantic look. I suspect "Prince of Persia" and maybe even "Clash of the Titans" impact could figure as well.
How could they possibly top the soundtrack?? I saw this movie with my dad at the old Cine Capri in Phoenix. When the opening credits started with "FLASH! AH AH!" it was awesome.
And the one thing it had going for a 12 year old boy, it was freaking sexy as hell!!! Watching Max von Sydow "pleasure" Melody Anderson was incredible. This falls into the "pause and toss" category.
