Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 7:03AM 'Green Lantern' Was Once Offered to Tarantino
Over the past year or so, I've consistently screwed up when talking about Green Lantern by calling it Green Hornet and vice versa. I know the difference, of course, but having both films in various stages of production has tripped me up more often than I care to admit. Thank goodness DC's Green Arrow is still a long way off and damn you, Noah Baumbach, for calling your new movie Greenberg.

The confusion slapped me again last night when I read Quentin Tarantino could have directed The Green Lantern. See, he could be ideal for The Green Hornet - and in fact, Al Hirt's madcap theme song from the TV show wound up on Tarantino's Kill Bill soundtrack - so that got me pretty excited. Then I came around, checked the title again, and it was that other green thing, after all. Certainly, QT had a few more detractors after Death Proof and before Inglourious Basterds, but even now that he's riding the biggest wave in his career, I don't think I'd want to see him saddle up with a $150 million comic book movie.
Fortunately, Tarantino feels the same way, acknowledging to MTV that if he were in his 20s he'd "specialize" in comic book flicks, but now he feels like he's "outgrown that a little bit." But he also says if he were to tackle a comic book hero, he'd rather create his own.

"I'm a writer. I'd want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks' memories of how this character should be and, 'Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder' or it's not as good as the way [DC Comics artist] Neal Adams drew him.' If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself."Wow, that's a purely crystallized bit of logic and wisdom from Tarantino. He's usually a tad more scattered than that...and I absolutely agree with him. A) He doesn't need to. B) He is a writer, and that's actually what he does best. C) It's the wrong green hero, anyway. It's still an interesting notion, I'll grant you, but I'm kind of glad he passed on the opportunity.

Kind of glad he passed??
Thank goodness, it would have ruined his brilliant career...
I mean QT is far superior to these, for the most part trash, comic book films...
He is a writer and needs to stick to original material, because he is amazing at it and there are far fewer and fewer people in the bizness that do what he does at a high level...
PS...Colin we forgive you! Just keep bangin away at these great posts!
