We know that a new biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming is in the works, and it looks like James McAvoy may play the author and WWII intelligence officer. Empire writes that McAvoy is attached, and we're fans of McAvoy and Fleming, meaning this news hits us pretty well.

Details are scant at this point, and there's no director on board as of yet, but based on McAvoy's age, this will likely cover the period between the war and the very beginnings of the Bond franchise, if it even goes that far. I haven't read Andrew Lycett's book on which the movie will be based, but I am reading The Irregulars, which is nominally about Roald Dahl's time in the British intelligence racket while he was stationed in Washington, D.C. Fleming, Noel Coward, and other famed Englishmen all did time with MI6 in one capacity or another during the war.
The casting presents an interesting challenge for McAvoy, who does not gravitate toward playboy roles very often, and that's at least part of what makes Fleming such an interesting character. It does, however, almost certainly rule him out for Bilbo Baggins, and even though Peter Jackson had already refuted that specific rumor, I always held out a little hope that it might come through.
Movies about authors don't usually pack in huge crowds, and in Fleming's case, the adventures he created are only slightly more intriguing than parts of his larger-than-life biography. But they're getting off on the right foot here with McAvoy, who still has to find time for the Wanted sequel and the adaptation of I'm With Cancer.
