Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 3:20PM Spielberg Among New Golden Globes Presenters
I know it may not get the worldwide audience the Oscars does and it may not be perceived to be as important as the Academy Awards in the grand scheme of things, but the Golden Globes telecast is starting to look like it might be very entertaining.

First, give the Hollywood Foreign Press Association credit for recognizing that Ricky Gervais might be a great host, but it's just as likely he'll lose complete control of the night because he is, first and foremost, a comedian. Either way, it could be memorable TV. Gervais has been great in recent awards shows, particularly if you're not one of his targets in the crowd. For my money, I'd rather have Gervais than the tag team of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, who will host the Oscars in March.
And the Globes has added a few presenters that are noteworthy, as well. Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman, and Avatar's Sam Worthington have been recruited, and in the past couple of weeks, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Colin Farrell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, and Mickey Rourke. If nothing else, they're big stars, about half of whom sell plenty of tabloid magazines. So I think NBC might have increased viewership, of course, for NBC, that's a low bar.
It also doesn't hurt that the top film of the year won't be an import about an Indian game show contestant (that most people hadn't seen by mid-January), but instead a George Clooney movie or what's shaping up to be one of the biggest films of all time (Avatar). The Golden Globes air live on Sunday, January 17th.
