An Embarrassment of New 'Invictus' Clips
Friday, December 4, 2009 at 6:38AM
There seems to be a hung jury in the case of Invictus. On paper, of course, this is Oscar bait: Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, the kind of powerful human story that Hollywood likes grab onto to smooth out the rough edges and polish it neatly into a ready-made formula. But early reviews were overly kind (nor overly critical), but the film just took home the National Board of Review awards for Best Director and Best Actor, and as the name of the group suggests, there are a few critics in the NBR.

So where do we stand now? Dunno. But Trailer Addict has nine new clips from the film, which opens a week from today. Freeman plays Nelson Mandela, which is a long overdue development, if you ask me. Damon is South African rugby player Francois Pienaar, who helps lead his team in the 1995 World Cup as a sign of new unity between the black majority and the white minority in the months following the outlaw of Apartheid.
About the most surprising aspect of this film is that Eastwood directs it. He's not exactly known for his inspirational movies. And now, enjoy about one-thirteenth of Invictus.
