Friday, December 4, 2009 at 8:53PM Taylor Lautner Grabs Lead in 'Max Steel'
Clearly, they're not looking for a lot of depth from the performance, but Paramount and Mattel have reportedly zeroed in on Taylor Lautner, Jacob from New Moon, to play the lead in Max Steel, based on the toy line.

Paramount...is eager to develop more toy properties along the lines of its Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, writes Steven Zeitchik of The Los Angeles Times. "Like those films, Steel traces back to the toy shelf -- the Mattel line that hit stores in 2001, pulled in $100 million in worldwide business in its first year and spawned an animated series that lasted three seasons.
Lautner would play Josh McGrath, a 19-year-old extreme sports junkie who is recruited into a secret government agency after an accident leaves his body infected with nanobots. They're the good kind of nanobots, however, because he becomes superhuman. It would be the first real cha-ching for Lautner outside of the Twilight movies (he has a supporting role in the upcoming Valentine's Day, a movie that has no leading roles), and something like this can't be unexpected for the 17-year-old, simply because Twilight is so enormous.
Boucher adds that the script is still being scrabbled together by J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, which puts this a couple years away, most likely. It's hard to knock the selection of Lautner, even though he has displayed the range of a wet paper airplane. He's got a built-in fan base, he fits the part, and he's looking for that next big thing.
