Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 12:19PM Academy Awards Short Film Short List Revealed
The Academy Awards short list for Live-Action Short Film has been released and thanks to In Contention, you can even watch trailers and excerpts of most of them to form an opinion about the category that, sadly, is most often referenced by the mainstream as the Oscar pool tie-breaker. Personally, I'm a big fan of the format because it requires a lot of storytelling and filmmaking ingenuity.

Before the most recent Oscars, in fact, we interviewed nominee Steph Green after featuring her film in that category, New Boy. I asked her what she felt the biggest misconception about shorts is. "Maybe that they take a short time to make because they're short. People always sound so shocked at how long it actually takes," Green said. "Sometimes that's because there are so few resources, and you're begging and pleading to get things. In fact, you may shoot for a very, very short amount of time, but New Boy took months and months [from beginning to end]."
Here's this year's hopefuls, and remember, this list will be trimmed to five eventually:
The Door - Juanita Wilson, director
The Ground Beneath - Rene Hernandez, director
Hotel - Tim Conrad, director
Instead of Abracadabra - Patrik Eklund, director
Kavi - Gregg Helvey, director
Miracle Fish - Luke Doolan, director
The New Tenants - Joachim Back, director
The Response - Adam Rodgers, director
Short Term 12 - Destin Daniel Cretton, director
Sidney Turtlebaum - Tristram Shapeero, director

I have only seen Sidney Turtlebaum which I thought it was pretty incredible and a well deserved winner of LA Shortfest. It is about a gay Jewish man in his seventies that gatecrashes funerals (shivas) and pickpockets the mourners. It has a bit of everything, drama, humour, but what I liked most about it was the performance of the lead (Derek Jacobi) who played Sidney who was nothing but senstational! Definatly worth seeing and a big contender I think!
