Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 10:33AM Box Office - 'Blind Side' Finally Wins Weekend
The terrific run for The Blind Side continued at the box office as it staked its first claim to number one in its third weekend of release. The film is another surprise hit for Warner Bros. (see The Hangover), and has already grossed $129 million, a tremendous number given that its opening weekend was under $35 million. It earned another $20 million this weekend to easily win the frame.

New Moon dropped to second place, earning $15.7 million, and its fortunes are about to stall in the US. However, with global ticket sales of over $570 million, more than ten times the production budget. As we discussed yesterday, only one movie that earned more than $100 million in its first weekend failed to hit $300 million. New Moon is now about $45 million away from that milestone, and it could get there, but it won't be by much.
New releases were pretty uninspiring in their performances, with Brothers leading the way with only $9.7 million. Armored finished in sixth place, with a little over $6.5 million. Up in the Air, in very, very limited release, still earned $1.8 million, good enough for 13th place. As expected over a month ago, A Christmas Carol has been able to shrug off a so-so opening to hold a pretty good audience ever since. It's up from fifth to fourth place this weekend, and has now earned over $115 million in the US. The overseas dollars have put the film in the black, so now it's just paying for the advertising, and it will probably get close to earning money after all the accounting is done.
The Top Five:
1 - The Blind Side ($20.4 million)
2 - New Moon ($15.7 million)
3 - Brothers ($9.7 million)
4 - A Christmas Carol ($7.5 million)
5 - Old Dogs ($6.9 million)

Surprised at "Brothers" doing OK (I was thinking sub $5 million), and again, astounded that "The Blind Side" is doing so well. It's already the highest grossing sports drama ever, & by the end of its run it'll be the biggest Football movie & highest grossing movie in Sandra Bullock's career.
Did anyone honestly expect that when this film was released? So glad for everyone involved in this film- it's a hit, and a deserving one.
Also, "Armored" won't hit $20 million, "Everybody's Fine" will be lucky to hit mid-teen numbers, and "Translymania" made an average of $250 in each of the 1,000 theaters it was in. YUP.
