Box Office - Liam Neeson: Action Star
Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 12:14PM
See what happens? You get all worked up about people paying good money to see Paul
Blart: Mall Cop for a couple weeks and then you're forced to give those same people credit for lining up
to see Taken instead of something else.

The new action flick starring Liam Neeson dusted the competition, outperforming the number two and three
films of the weekend combined, and earning $25 million, according to Box Office Mojo. It has been a good six
weeks for Fox, the oft-derided studio that couldn't buy a hit through most of 2008. Between Marley &
Me, this film, and the performance of its Fox Searchlight awards movies, particularly Slumdog
Millionaire, Fox has put some of its goofs from last year in the past.
There are still people seeing Paul Blart in strong numbers. It finished the weekend in second place
and will crack $100 million next weekend, most likely. Contrast that with Underworld, which opened in
second place a week ago and tumbled to number seven this weekend.
Most of the heat is still on films that have been in theaters a while, however, since The Uninvited and New in Town weren't terribly competitive. One of the surprises is Hotel for Dogs, which
stayed at number four and is really close to earning $50 million. Gran Torino is right there, too,
having taken in over $110 million.
The Top Five:
1 - Taken ($24.6 million)
2 - Paul Blart ($14 million)
3 - The Uninvited ($10 million)
4 - Hotel for Dogs ($8.7 million)
5 - Gran Torino ($8.6 million)

Really enjoyed this first time round (who'd have thought of Liam Neeson as action-flick guy?!)
Second viewing, however, wasn't so good - the ropey dialogue stood out more and his daughters' goofy run annoyed me!
Excellent poster campaign though, and still worth a watch.
