Watch the Nominated Short Film 'New Boy'

We've been tracking down some of the nominated short films for this year's Academy Awards. Already, we've presented three of the animated shorts (plus parts of the other two nominees) and now here's our first live action nominee, the Irish production, New Boy. I think there's a general misconception that short films are in some way less relevant or professionally made than their feature-length counterparts, that they're somehow just worse movies. In fact, the opposite is very often true, and despite budgetary limitations, you can find some terrific shorts anytime you go looking for them. We hope to bring you an interview with the director of New Boy, Steph Green, next week, as the Academy Awards draw a little bit closer. In the meantime, enjoy the short film, and be on the lookout for a few more between now and February 22nd.

I wish there were more venues for short films. Whenever I am able to make it to a festival, I always run across a handful of terrific ones. However, the average Joe can't really go to a lot of festivals all the time. Watching them on the internet just isn't the same. Word of advice to anyone making out to a festival: see all the shorts you can. The batting average for them is much higher.
