Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 10:31PM The Trailer of 'Pelham 123'
You don't see much of Denzel Washington being a schlub, but that's certainly what appears to be on the menu in The Taking of Pelham 123. This remake is a slightly different kind of heist movie, because the action is set on a train.

The original film from 1974 was lighter on the action than I expect this to be; you don't see Walter Matthau and think, "stunts." Plus, Tony Scott's directing this, and he's a guy who can't sit still for very long behind the camera.
Denzel's the good guy, Travolta's the bad guy, and he's been better in that capacity over the past few years, so this could be yet another career rebirth for Barbarino.

From the looks of it competition will be light enough (The Hangover, The Proposal and Imagine That) to see this film take its opening weekend. It maybe has legs to hold on for the following weekend if it isn't completely overshadowed by marketing for Transformers. Once Revenge of the Fallen hits Pelham will likely be zipping its way to dvd. I like both Washington & Travolta but this film feels like something I've seen before.
I loved Travolta in Pulp Fiction but that's about it. Maybe it's his whiny voice, I don't know. He just doesn't strike me as villainous. He looks cool in the shades and with that tat on his neck, but as soon as he opens his mouth I start thinking of the next trailer I want to watch. As a matter of fact, I didn't make it through the trailer at all.My friend and I gave it the gong because, and I quote 1997's "Face Off"... "We're not having any fun!".
